Blackbird Headband, a free beginner friendly crochet earwarmer pattern

April 9, 2026      Leave a Comment

I know the weather is likely warming up wherever you are, but I think headbands (or earwarmers) are a great year-round project. Evenings and early mornings are generally still cool, so they’re perfect for a walk/run without getting too hot. They’re always a big seller at craft fairs/markets. And they’re quick gift makes.

The Blackbird Headband uses a simple but impactful crossed half double crochet stitch (or an X-stitch) to bring some texture and visual interest while still being easy enough to memorize and fast to work up.

Below you’ll find 1- sizes with corresponding yarn weights for each size in a chart. The chart includes both the head circumference and the finished headband size. The headband is intentionally smaller than the head circumference since it stretches; I recommend choosing your size by the head circumference.

I’ve given instructions for both a plain flat circle headband as well as a twisted knot finish.
