The weather is starting to warm up, which means it’s time to start working with the warm weather yarns, like cotton. There are so many great cotton options…how do you choose?
This week I released my Mountain Kitchen Collection of patterns, and all 4 patterns use Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton yarn. This was my first time using this particular cotton yarn, so I wanted to do a quick yarn review for you. You can snag the pattern bundle on Ravelry for 20% now!
Pros:
- This yarn is soft. It’s not scratchy like some of the cotton yarns widely available in stores. If you want a natural fiber baby blanket, but are worried about allergies to animal fibers, this cotton would make a phenomenal blanket.
- This is a mercerized cotton, which means it’s shinier and stronger than non-mercerized cottons.
- The drape of the fabric created by this yarn is amazing. It’s a great cotton for garments.
- The colors! Mercerized cotton takes color better than non-mercerized cotton, so the 24/7 colors are deep and vibrant. There are 25 different colors available on the Lion Brand website, so there’s something for everyone!
- Cost – $4.99 on the Lion Brand website for a 3.5 oz / 186 yard ball. It’s a little pricier than Sugar n Cream cotton yarn, but you’re getting a better quality cotton for the cost.
- Ease of care – machine wash and dry; no fuss cleaning!
Cons:
- Cost…”But you said this was a pro!” I know. I think it’s both. It IS more costly than some other cotton yarns, and depending on your budget, your project, or your profit goals, you may not want to spend the $4.99.
- Accessibility. You won’t find this in all the stores you typically shop for your yarn. I can find some color options at my local Joann store, but not at Michael’s or WalMart. You can order it online at lionbrand.com, lovecrafts.com, michaels.com, joann.com, and herrschners.com.
I didn’t experience any splitting of the yarn while working with it, which is always a plus. I also didn’t experience any rubbing or chafing on my fingers while working with the yarn.
Overall I give this yarn 4.5 stars out of 5. If it were more widely available at stores, I may go ahead and up that to a solid 5 stars.
