Every month this year Lion Brand Yarn is featuring a color. For February, it’s Antique, and that includes all kinds of pretty pinks. One of my new personal favorites is their Touch of Alpaca yarn. 90% acrylic, 10% alpaca, 100% luxury.
I saw this yarn on sale last month, picked it up, HAD TO HAVE IT. I knew I wanted to make a cowl with it, because this softness needed to be around my neck. It took a few weeks before I ran across the perfect stitch and the pattern came together.
Before I get to the pattern, let’s talk about this yarn. It’s a 4, worsted weight yarn. 90% acrylic, 10% alpaca, which means you can machine wash it. It’s available in 2 skein sizes – 3.5 oz with 207 yards, and a Bonus Bundle with 7 oz and 415 yards. Very reasonably priced at $6.49 and $9.99 respectively, this is a great introduction to natural and luxury fibers, and available at your favorite stores to purchase yarn. When I first started squishing it working with it, I was worried that it would be delicate and would split, but as I got into the meat of my pattern I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of splitting. Every stitch worked up very easily. I used Knitter’s Pride DREAMZ Interchangeable Needles
It’s a very light worsted weight yarn and has great drape. I was worried working this cowl up in worsted weight yarn that it would be stiff and difficult to wear, but it’s SO nice, and SO warm!
Okay, I’m going to be real with you here. There was one thing I didn’t love about the yarn. It’s a small thing, and it wouldn’t stop me from using it again. Because it does have that natural alpaca fiber in there, it does shed on you a little. There were little pieces of alpaca fiber on me and my couch when I worked on the cowl. Not a deal breaker for me, I just would be mindful about where I work on projects with this yarn – it wouldn’t be a project I would take to someone else’s house or out in public, because I wouldn’t want to deal with picking off those fibers while I’m out and about. Honestly, not a big deal, but I’m here to give you the real deal on the yarn, and that’s part of it.
