I was recently wandering around Michael’s, as you do when you’re a maker, and I stumbled upon Caron Cotton Cakes yarn. Oh my! I knew immediately that it needed to be a light and airy spring/summer wrap. I’m excited to introduce to you the Somewhere Rainbow Wrap.

Let’s talk a bit about this yarn. It’s Caron Cotton Cakes by Yarnspirations. If you’ve been around the crochet/knit world for a little while, you’ve no doubt seen/heard about/used Caron Cakes yarn. Once that exploded in popularity Yarnspirations expanded the Caron Cakes line to include Big Cakes, Baby Cakes, Tea Cakes, Sprinkle Cakes, Chunky Cakes, Cupcakes, and now Cotton Cakes. The Cotton Cakes are 60% cotton and 40% acrylic. This yarn is SO soft, and the drape on the fabric is perfection. And the stitch definition…LOVE.

I love the colors they put together for all the Cakes yarns and even if I don’t use one of those yarns, I often turn to them for some color inspiration. Now, my only complaint about these yarns, especially this Cotton Cakes, is that I wish they were also available in solid colors. As I was making this wrap I just kept thinking how GORGEOUS a baby blanket this yarn would make if ONLY it were solid colors.

I wanted open, airy stitches for this wrap, but something that would still have some good structure and definition. I pulled out my crochet stitches book for inspiration, and didn’t find anything I loved. So off to the crochet stitches I have saved on Pinterest and bingo! The Linen Stitch/Moss Stitch. Paired up with a double crochet open weave stitch, this made the perfect fabric for this time of year. Where I live it’s cool in the mornings and evenings, and hot during the day, so this is great to wrap around my shoulders when we go sit outside in the evening.

Even though these colors aren’t traditional rainbow colors, I just kept singing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” while I was making it, and as I started to think about the name for the pattern I just got stuck on the Somewhere Rainbow Wrap. This was by far the easiest pattern name for me so far. The pattern itself is pretty simple, but the angled construction keeps it interesting for you.
