I’ve written my VERY FIRST crochet pattern! I love the shell stitch, and it’s REALLY easy to do. The thing I love about this pattern is that it’s SO EASY to customize to any size you want. Want a different width? Add or remove rows! Want it to be longer so you can wrap it more than once? Add more starting chains – instructions included.

I hope you enjoy making this cowl as much as I enjoyed writing this pattern. 🙂

You can purchase a PDF version of this pattern on Etsy or Ravelry.

Materials:

    • Worsted weight yarn (I used Caron Simply Soft, but you can easily substitute any yarn!)
    • H crochet hook (5 mm) (I love Boye Aluminum Crochet Hooks, and they make ergonomic ones, too!)

Finished Size:

22” around, 8” wide

(Pattern can be modified to be any size you want, with a longer starting chain and more pattern repeats.)

Gauge

4 double crochet per inch

Abbreviations:
Ch = chain
dc = double crochet
sc = single crochet
sk = skip
sl st = slip stitch

Instructions:

Chain 80; join in the round, being careful not to twist your chain

Row 1 – Ch 1, sk 1, *3 dc in next, sk 1, sc in next, sk 1*. Repeat * * to last sc; 3 dc in last sc. Sl st to ch 1 to join.

Row 2 – Ch 3, 1 dc in same space, sk 1, *sc in next stitch (middle of shell from previous row), sk 1, 3 dc in next (sc from previous row), sk 1*. Repeat * * to last shell; sc next, 1 dc in same space as starting chain. Sl st to top of ch 3 to join.

Row 3 – Ch 1, sk 1, 3 dc in next, *sk 1, sc in next, sk 1, 3 dc in next*. Repeat * * to end. Sl st to ch 1 to join.

Repeat rows 2 & 3   8 more times.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

To make a larger or smaller size, simply adjust the number of starting chains, being sure to chain a multiple of 4 for the pattern repeat.

If you prefer a straighter finished edge, you can end with a row of single crochet into each stitch; fasten off and weave in ends.
