Bella Square Blanket

I am rediscovering the granny square and its many variations, and I have to say I LOVE them! Solids, stripes, squares, hexagons, small, big…they’re SO versatile and a great way to use up yarn scraps. Here is a simple pattern for a solid granny square that only uses about 12 yards of yarn per square and whips up in about 10 minutes.

Materials:

• Worsted weight yarn – approx 12 yards per square (I like to use Caron One Pound yarn)
• H 5.00 mm crochet hook

Finished Size:

Each square measures 4 inches x 4 inches

Abbreviations:

• Ch = Chain
• DC = Double Crochet
• Sl St = Slip Stitch
• St(s) = Stitch(es)

Instructions:

Chain 3 at the beginning of each round counts as a stitch and counts in the final stitch count.

Ch 4

1. 11 DC in first ch. Sl st to top of ch 3. (12 sts)

2. Ch 3. DC in same st. 2 DC next st. 2 DC, ch 2, 2 DC all in next st. *2 DC in each  of next 2 sts. 2 DC, ch 2, 2 DC all in next st.* Repeat * * 2 more times. Sl st to top of ch 3. (32 DC sts)

3. Ch 3. DC in each of next 5 sts. 2 DC, ch 2, 2 DC all in ch space from previous row. DC in each of next 8 sts. 2 DC, ch 2, 2 DC all in ch space from previous row. *DC in each  of next 8 sts. 2 DC, ch 2, 2 DC all in next st.* Repeat * * 2 more times. DC in last 2 sts. Sl st to top of ch 3.  (48 DC sts)

• Make a total of 81 squares for a 36” x 36” blanket.
• Join squares with the whip stitch.
• Finish blanket with a border of your choice – I love using a round of single crochet and then a round of the crab stitch, or reverse single crochet, for my border.

To make the square larger, repeat round 3, placing 1 DC in each edge DC around, and 2 DC, ch 2, 2 DC in each chain space.

You can easily adjust the size of the blanket by making the number of 4” x 4” squares needed to achieve your size preference.
